Dear Serpell,

Revision

July, 1947.

Reduetion of the Hong Kong Grant Code

That

Last year Miss Ruston had correspondence

with James about a revision in the 1941 School

Grant and Subsidy Code in Hong Kong.

correspondence rested with James' letter No.S.52892/01 of the 26th August, 1946, which

approved expenditure of £7,000 per annum for the purpose of enabling the salaries of trained Anglo-Chinese Masters and Mistresses to be

increased so as to bring them on to the same

scale as that approved for Masters and

Mistresses of similar status and qualifications

in Government schools.

2.

Subsequently, in October of last year^

Sir Mark Young informed us in a despatch that he had provisionally approved certain amendments

to the 1941 Grant Code, details of which are

given in the two enclosures to this letter. Ther

Jade- amendments involving an increase in expenditure are (a) that Heads of schools shall be entitled to a Charge Allowance in addition to salary, and (b) teachers whose permanent domicile is outside the Far East shall receive an Overseas Allowance at the

rate of £100 per annum for men and £70 for

women.
